SALSA - quiz fund raiser - The John Vincent Memorial Big Quiz Gig

Spicks and Specks host, Adam Hills has joined on again for next year's John Vincent Memorial Big Gig Quiz.

This year's inaugural quiz saw the winner take all - an assortment of prizes, including a microwave [split that amongst 6] - total value over $6,000.00. The quiz was held at the Arkaba Hotel on the 19th of May and sold out weeks in advance.

The quiz, an annual event, has been named after the late Australian Radio Legend John Vincent who passed away recently. His daughters, Sam, Heidi and Belinda were guests at the evening and said "they were just so emotional to see so many people turn up."

Thanks to new technology tables keyed in their answers and within seconds of all answering the result and answers were flashed on to huge screens.

"It was just like playing Who Wants To Be A millionaire" said David Day, Chair of SALSA. "I'm sure other States will be able to hook in to this new system which just takes away all the hassle and stress of ticking and adding up tons of paper work."

A huge thank you to SALSA committee members, Gary Burrows, Jane Intini, Sheridan Stewart, Tony Savage plus Debonair Greg Clark who together raised $5000 for Support Act.

Bigger Brighter and Better, next year, as they say. Adam Hills claims he’s already got some comedy to use in a new show from some of the happenings on the night.

Radio veteran John Vincent dies

LEGENDARY radio man John "Vinnie" Vincent's magnificent, mellifluous voice boomed out one last time to 500 mourners at his funeral service today.

"Take care and I love you lots", he beseeched. His final recording made for the Debonair’s club, which raises funds for hard-up entertainers, was played for the first time in public to celebrate the life of one of Adelaide’s most colourful, funniest and loved radio personalities.

They were serious, heartfelt words, unlike his quick, witty on-air utterings during his stellar four-decade career on six Adelaide radio stations, or that irreverent verbiage of Vinnie’s alter-ego ocker rocker, Ken Oath.

At the service today, held at Berry Funeral Home in Norwood, the other John Vincent starred, the devoted family man who doted on his three daughters, "daddy's girls" Samantha, Heidi and Belinda.

"To be honest, he was just a big kid who didn't take life so seriously and told us never to grow up," recalled his daughter Heidi Vincent in her eulogy.

"He would make up silly songs playing them to us on his guitar and for Sam's eight birthday he performed as 'Harry Poppy'."

Myriad photographs portrayed a husband, father and grand-father who was a jovial dad, but also a "great worrier" who drove "the brats" from place to place in the safest of all cars, a big red Volvo station-wagon.

They captured Vinnie as "Poppa Dork" surrounded by three gorgeous red-haired grand-daughters, baby grand-sons, embracing his wife, Sue, and as father of the bride.

His idiosyncratic self was also celebrated - that his tea needed to be stirred anti-clockwise and that Vinnie hated sport so much he once tried to get Foxtel to remove the Sports stations.

Vinnie suffered heart problems from birth and had serious heart surgery in his late teens. He died last Friday, March 27th, aged 67.

Legends of Rock Dinner raises over $12,000 for Support Act

The first, annual “Legends of Rock” dinner, ably organised by the big-hearted folks from Savage Events, was held last Friday 24th October at The Shores Function Centre in Adelaide where over 250 music lovers gathered to witness a sterling line-up of some of the genuine stalwarts of Aussie rock. Stevie Wright, back by a house band of exceptional local players, sang four Easybeats classics, GANGajang played a set packed with hits including “Sounds of Then” and “Gimme Some Lovin’”; Swanee, Tice & Evans, The Beards and Doc Neeson belted out crowd favourites and Sheridan Stewart held the show together, even though some of us were afraid her dress may not have held her together!

The purpose of the dinner was to raise money for Support Act Ltd, the benevolent fund set up by Michael Chugg & other music industry luminaries to assist music industry workers who have fallen on hard times. Wallets were emptied & there was particularly fierce bidding on the Elvis Presley car seat (yes, a piece from the seat of his Cadillac) and the Mark Evans (ex-AC/DC bassist) signed guitar. The generous dinner-ites raised well over $12,000.00 from the auction, table raffles and ticket sales which is an incredible effort in these tough economic times. Thanks to the lads from Toop & Toop who kept the auction turning over at such a fierce pace.

Chairman of Support Act Ltd SA (SALSA), David Day said, “…it was an extraordinary night that was on a par with the old Grand Prix and Clipsal 500 balls. This is going to be ‘the’ social event for SA each year as it gets bigger and better. Support Act Ltd is proud to be the beneficiary of such an event that is planned to go national in 2009.”

Plans are already well under way for the 2009 event, with many famous faces already pledging their support for such a worthy cause.

For those who wished they were there, or want to re-live their glory days, Stevie Wright, Swanee and Tice & Evans will be back in Adelaide to take part in the Adelaide International Guitar Festival “AC/DC – We Salute you” Tribute concert, alongside the Hoodoo Gurus, Adrian Belew, The Party Boys, Angry Anderson & many, many others, which closes the Festival on Sun 7th Dec in Elder Park. Bookings from Bass or visit www.adelaideguitarfestival.com.au.

The next SALSA monthly lunch will be held at our spiritual home, the Rob Roy Hotel in Halifax Street, city on Wed 19th Nov at 12.30pm with “Mr Radio” Paul Thompson the guest speaker. Anyone with a genuine working history in the music business, whether on stage or behind the scenes, is welcome to attend. That can include radio, TV, journalists, technicians, venue owners, musicians etc. Simply email Gary Burrows at APRA SA on gburrows@apra.com.au to register your interest or visit www.supportact.com.au for further information.
